Domain Name FAQ

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address that makes your website accessible to the public. For instance, our domain name is posilco.com, which is the address you used to reach us. A domain name is essential for establishing your online presence and is often more important than having a phone number these days. With our instant domain search, you can easily check the availability of domain names and find the perfect name for your site.

What is the difference between a domain, web hosting and a website?

A domain is the name or address that people use to find your website, like www.example.co.za. Web hosting, on the other hand, provides the storage and resources that make your website functional. You can purchase a domain without web hosting, but you cannot get hosting without first having a domain name.

A website is the actual content (pages, images, etc.) displayed when visitors access a domain.

I already have a domain name, can I transfer it to PoSilCo?

Absolutely! If you’ve registered your domain with another provider, like GoDaddy or Domains.co.za, you can easily transfer it to PoSilCo in our Client Zone.

What should I consider when choosing a domain name?

When choosing a domain name, consider keeping it short, easy to spell, relevant to your business, and using common extensions like .co.za, .com or .uk for broader appeal.

Once I register a domain, can I change it later?

Unfortunately, once you register a domain and complete the payment, it cannot be changed. This is why it’s important to double-check the spelling of your domain name before registering it. However, you are not obligated to renew the domain each year if you decide you no longer want it. You can simply let it expire once the first year is complete

Can I register my domain forever?

Domains can’t be registered indefinitely; they are typically registered for a set time period, usually one year. However, we automatically renew your domain before it expires, allowing you to maintain ownership as long as you wish, unless you instruct us otherwise.

How long do I have to wait after registering a domain before I can upload web files?

After registering a domain, it can take up to 72 hours for the registration to propagate worldwide. However, you can upload your website content through our Client Zone as soon as your hosting package is active. There's no need to wait until propagation is complete to start uploading your files.

Email services will only become available once the domain propagation is complete.

Domain & Hosting Transfer FAQ

If I transfer to PoSilCo from another host, will you transfer my website and email for me?

Yes, we’ll gladly help with transferring your website and email. After you’ve placed your hosting order and made your first payment, just provide us with the login details for your current hosting panel. We’ll review your setup and let you know what data we can transfer for you. The data we can move will depend on your current hosting environment, but we’ll guide you through the process.

How long does a domain transfer take?

Domain transfers typically take between 1 to 5 days. However, the exact timeframe can vary depending on how quickly the current domain registrant responds to our transfer request.

Will there be any downtime during the transfer?

We aim to minimize downtime during the transfer process. Proper planning and coordination will help ensure your site remains live while we migrate your data.

Can I keep my domain name when I transfer hosting?

Yes, you can keep your existing domain name when transferring hosting. You’ll simply need to transfer your domain to us or update the DNS settings to point to our servers.

Will my website’s functionality or design be affected during the transfer?

No, your website’s functionality and design should remain unchanged as long as all files and databases are properly transferred.

Do I need to cancel my old hosting service after the transfer?

Yes, once the transfer is complete and everything is functioning correctly, you should cancel your old hosting service to avoid paying for both. Keep in mind that hosts require a full calendar month's notice, so plan accordingly.
